Aerial View of the Duke of York's Royal Military School at Dover (taken in 1945/46 - before the Boys returned from Saunton Sands) Being another excellent photograph, despite its age, I felt it better NOT to reduce its size/resolution in this case so that you can see 'all in its glory'! (I did similar for the Trooping 1910 photograph, you'll notice! JAO) Here can clearly be seen the old Music Room and what used to be the Roman Catholic Church (as well as the 6th Form/Prefects Common Room I seem to recall?) whilst the old wooden Junior School Block can clearly be seen on its left along with the Tailors' Shop as well as the Physics Lab. (domain of one Joe 'Crem' Davies in my day!) Above the latter is the White Rose Club, between Wolseley House & the Dining Hall and, of course, the Padre's House and the Headmaster's abode can be seen as 'clear as day'. I've lost my bearings again because there don't appear to be any Married Quarters for Officers yet near the Deal Gate ... probably because of the general lack of Officers at that time! Art Cockerill has written that "the damage to Roberts House during WWII can clearly be seen here. Only the Day Room is gutted. The wings of the ' H shape' and toilets/ablution facilities at the back of the building appear to be in good order. We (Peter Goble & I) concluded that Roberts did suffer fire damage but that this was probably not the result of enemy action (as at first thought) but more likely, collateral (and this is speculative) damage caused by the occupants; probably carelessness from Smoking or some similar such neglect! We may be wrong, of course, but that was our conclusion."
(My thanks to both Peter Goble and Art Cockerill for their permission to reproduce this photograph - and to Mike Hoare for requesting & obtaining said permission! [2010]) |
